Listed Building - Definition

A building can be Listed if it is considered by English Heritage to be of special architectural interest, or of important historic interest. This normally means that Listed Buildings include:

  • All buildings surviving from before 1700 in their original condition
  • Most buildings built between 1700 and 1840
  • Specific buildings of importance built between 1840 and 1914
  • Outstanding buildings built since 1914, or which are under threat

Buildings can be listed in three grades: I, II* and II.

  • About 2% of buildings are listed Grade I, being of exceptional interest
  • About 4% are Grade II*, important buildings of more than special interest
  • The remaining 94% of buildings are listed Grade II

Listed buildings are subject to the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Local Authority Consent is required for any works of alteration, extension, or demolition, which in any way affect the character of the building, and for some repairs which will need to be carried out on a like for like basis, using the same materials and techniques.
